What Are Radiesse Injections?

Radiesse is a brand of injectable dermal fillers that can increase volume and fill in the creased or folded areas around your face and hands. Oftenly used for wrinkles and areas around the nose and mouth, Radiesse is FDA-approved as a  non-allergenic option for people who want a natural, long-lasting option with a lower chance of adverse reactions.

Radiesse adds volume in two ways. First, just like other dermal fillers, it is a gel-like substance that, when injected underneath the outer surface of the skin, adds volume to the treated area. Second, its main ingredient of calcium hydroxylapatite can stimulate collagen production, which can add more filler naturally.

CaHa is a naturally-occurring substance already found in your body. When injected beneath the surface of your skin, dermal fillers can promote collagen production, which is essential to maintaining your skin’s hydration and elasticity. This means that, on top of adding volume to your facial features, Radiesse can also promote healthier facial skin.

Why We Recommend Radiesse

Both younger and older adults can benefit from getting dermal fillers. Younger adults may have naturally thin areas and folds due to repeat facial movements, while older adults may experience severe facial wrinkles and a loss in facial volume as they age and their facial fat diminishes. Radiesse is one injectable dermal filler that can work as a wrinkle filler for facial wrinkles or for areas with lost volume. Specifically, it can best treat the following areas:

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Upper lip lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Pre-jowl folds

Many patients that choose Radiesse report positive experiences that can last at least 12 months up to 18 months. Everyone deserves to look their best, and Radiesse can provide the best outcome to treat the problem areas around the lower side of your face.

Benefits of Radiesse Injections

Radiesse can do a number of changes to your facial appearance, making it a good option for patients who want a natural-based filler to treat skin issues along the lower part of your face. Some of the benefits you can expect from getting Radiesse injections include:

  • Lower chance of adverse reactions. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a naturally-occurring substance found in your bones. This means that the risk of an allergy or adverse reaction to the main ingredient is very low, compared to other dermal fillers made with synthetic materials.
  • Promote healthier, younger-looking skin. CaHA can stimulate collagen production, which can improve your skin’s appearance and elasticity. This can help give you a glowing, youthful appearance.
  • Added natural filler. Radiesse’s ability to increase collagen can add additional filler into the area, which can promote a longer filler lifespan compared to other natural fillers like hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.
  • Instant results. Results of your Radiesse injections are instantly visible immediately after the procedure. This is a subtle but noticeable change as your face appears fuller and smoother. You can see the difference immediately, but it can take up to two weeks for the filler to settle.
  • Can be combined with other cosmetic treatments. Radiesse can be safely combined with other minimally invasive treatments. We recommend Dr. Lanna Aesthetics Signature Liquid Facelift, which combines nonsurgical injectables like Botox cosmetic injections with your Radiesse injections. Schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Lanna Aesthetics today to learn more about the best options for you.

Our Process for Radiesse Injections

Before our patients receive treatment, they first have to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Lanna Aesthetics. You’ll discuss the aesthetic treatments you want, how you want to improve your appearance, and if Radiesse injections are the right path towards your goals. If you’re as suitable candidate for Radiesse, Dr. Lanna Aesthetics will proceed with her process for administering Radiesse.

Getting dermal filler injections from Dr. Lanna Aesthetics takes less than an hour. First, we’ll apply a topical numbing cream into the areas Dr. Lanna Aesthetics will inject filler into. This is to minimize the pain of the filler injection. Next, Dr. Lanna Aesthetics will add the right amount of Radiesse into the treatment area.

As soon as the procedure is over, you can see a noticeable difference fillers have on your treated area. However, it can take up to two weeks for the filler to settle.

Aftercare Tips

Radiesse injections are minimally invasive and don’t require so much downtime or recovery period, so you can perform most of the activities you’d normally do. You may experience common minor side effects on the treatment areas, including:

  • Bruising in the injection areas
  • Redness, itching, and irritation
  • Swelling
  • Minor pain

These are side effects associated with other injection procedures. This is simply your body reacting to the injection, and it can subside within a few days after your treatment. For bruising, it can take up to two weeks for the discoloration to fade. For less common side effects like skin infections and lumps, see a doctor.

It can take up to two weeks for the Radiesse filler to fully settle into the treated area. To minimize the side effects and avoid affecting the end result of your treatment, there are some aftercare practice you can do:

  • Avoid alcoholic drinks. Ideally, you should avoid alcohol at least one week before getting your dermal fillers and up to one week after your treatment. Alcohol can increase your pain response, which can make the injection more painful than it is. It can also act as a blood-thinner, which can promote bruising.
  • Don’t touch the injection sites. Avoid touching the treatment area especially with unwashed hands. There’s a risk of infecting the injection site, which can lead to acne or bacterial infection. In case of bacterial infection, see a doctor for oral or topical antibiotics.
  • Sleep on your back. Sleeping on your side or on your stomach can add unnecessary pressure to the treated area, which can affect how the filler settles.
  • Use a cold compress on bruises. Bruising is common with injection procedures, so there’s a risk of bruising after your dermal filler injection. You can use an ice pack or cold compress to minimize the bruising and heal it faster. It can take up to two weeks for bruises to fully heal.
  • Reduce strenuous activities. Reduce intense exercises and other strenuous activities up to three days after your treatment. Increased blood pressure can promote bruising in the treatment areas.
  • Avoid certain facial products. Namely, avoid skincare products with AHAs, retinol, and vitamin C, as well as any oil-based makeup for 24 hours. This can cause irritation around the injection site. Massaging or applying these products can also cause the filler to spread.
  • Avoid additional cosmetic treatments. If you plan on having other cosmetic treatments like facials, microneedling, laser treatment, or any other procedure done immediately after getting fillers, consult with Dr. Lanna Aesthetics. They can advise which treatments are safe to combine with dermal fillers without affecting the results.

FAQs

Q: What’s the difference between CaHA fillers and other fillers?

A: Each filler type has its own advantages. Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite. Unlike dermal fillers like Sculptra (made with Poly-L-lactic acid) or Bellafill (made with polymethyl-methacrylate), calcium hydroxylapatite is naturally occurring in the body, which means that the main filler ingredient has a lower chance of triggering an adverse allergy. CaHA also has the benefit of promoting collagen production and stimulating a natural collagen filler from your body. Schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Lanna Aesthetics to learn which one is right for you.

Q: How long do Radiesse filler injections last?

A: Radiesse is only temporary and can last between 12 to 18 months. Factors like your body type, lifestyle habits, and aftercare practices can affect how long the effects of the filler can last. To maintain the results of your dermal filler injections, you will need follow-up maintenance injections.

Q: Are dermal filler injections painful?

A: Like many other injections, there may be some discomfort when getting dermal fillers. To minimize this, we use a topical anesthetic. Radiesse also contains lidocaine, which can reduce the pain during the injection. There may also be side effects like pain and bruising after the treatment. The pain should subside after a few days, though you can take home remedies like over-the-counter pain relievers to minimize the side effects.

Q: How much are Radiesse treatments?

A: The price of Radiesse treatments can vary between patients; some patients need more syringes to achieve their desired results, while some need less. Schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Lanna Aesthetics to get an accurate price on how much filler you need to enhance your natural features.

Q: Who can get Radiesse treatment?

A: Anyone over 21 can get dermal fillers, but most of the issues a Radiesse injection normally treats are seen in most adults aged 30 to 60 years old. During your initial consultation with Dr. Lanna Aesthetics, you can learn more about Radiesse to see if you are a suitable candidate. Those experiencing the following may not be allowed to receive Radiesse:

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Are taking blood-thinning medication
  • Have an existing skin infection or are taking medication to treat your skin infection (wait until your skin infection has fully healed before getting dermal fillers)
  • Have allergies to lidocaine and other ingredients found in Radiesse
  • Have a history of serious allergies
  • Have a history of bleeding disorders or herpes

Dr. Lanna Aesthetics may recommend an alternative filler, postponing the injection to a later date, or an alternative treatment.
